Downloading Software

Downloading software may seem simple but it can be fraught. When you download a piece of software and run the installer, it asks you if you would like to go with the recommended settings or do a custom install.  Most people will go with the recommended install to save time and in case they do something negative.

In fact, you're sometimes better off going into the custom settings because the recommended settings usually means what they want you to have, rather than what you actually need.

Most of the time, these settings will include unwanted or unnecessary "free" things such as McAfee Security Scan (free until it finds something, then it costs you to fix what it finds) and also undesirable things relating to your broswer such as making Bing your home page. These are quite often ticked when you proceed with the recommended settings.

When you click custom, you can untick any of the ones you don't want. You can usually go back to the recommended option if you want to as well.  If you use Internet Explorer to download software, always use "save" and not "run".  That way, if you find you want to cancel the installation and re-run it with a different choice, you still have and can easily find the downloaded file to re-run.

A good source for many common downloads which don't come with all the unwanted bloatware or unwanted changes to settings is the Ninite website.
